The Konjac Potato

I love discovering and sharing under-the-radar natural products. I've just found a new, all natural cleanser that isn't too expensive and seemingly works on all skin types.

The Konjac sponge has been making waves in Asian beauty circles for a while and is now available from the Ruby Box. According to the Konjac Sponge Company the konjac potato or konnyaku is a perennial plant native to Asia, and can be found growing wild at very high altitudes. A totally natural food source, konjac is 97% water, rich in mineral goodness and low in calories. Naturally alkaline, Konjac is pH neutral which leaves skin perfectly balanced. a powerful potato-like plant rich in minerals, vitamins, protein, iron and zinc cultivated for food in Japan and Korea. They grow at a high altitude and thus are very pure and pollutant free. For over a century, the Japanese have been using the Konjac vegetable as a beauty treatment – this natural alkaline balances the skin's PH levels.
Body Sponge French Red Clay
The sponges are 100% natural and eco-friendly for both facial and body use. They remove grime, oil, blackheads, dead cells while gently exfoliates skin.  The mineral  and antioxidant contents help nourish and smooth skin naturally, even on the most delicate of skins. The texture is soft enough for daily use and can be used on your face or body.

You will need to wet it under warm water until it’s completely soaked through. Once it's completely soaked and puffy, simply use the flat side in small circular motions. The massage action helps to exfoliate and rejuvenate tired, dull skin.

Each sponge is coloured coded depending on the nature of your skin type or problem, with the rounded sponges for your face and the flattish ridged ones for your body.

Puff Sponge with Mineral Rich French Red ClayThe red sponge is for dry & sensitive skin, but also wonderful for anyone whose skin has no particular concern. Red clay cleans the skin by removing dead keratinized cells, accelerating the regeneration process which improves blood circulation and makes the skin look radiant, and hydrated. Try this sponge if you're beginning to notice the appearance of wrinkles as it works best on more mature skin.
Puff Sponge with Mineral Rich French Green Clay

The green sponge is for normal to combination skin. Green clay has a sterilising effect; keeping bacteria at bay. This clay also helps to absorb dirt, oil, and bacteria, while gently cleansing the pores, a plus for those that have issues with midday shine.

Bamboo charcoal gives the black sponge its hue. This sponge is best for oily skin, especially teen skin or skin prone to blackheads and outbreaks. Charcoal contains activated carbon which is perfect for removing excess oil. Bamboo Charcoal is also a natural antioxidant keeping acne-causing bacteria at bay.

The original white konjac sponge is 100% pure konjac with no added clays. The white sponge is 100% alkaline, balancing the  pH level of your skin while still gently exfoliating and cleansing. Unlike the other Konjac sponges, you can use this with your daily cleanser, in place of a facial brush.

The pink sponge is your best bet for extremely sensitive skin. It is the most gentle of the sponges (while they all are, this combination of clays is quite calming).  Red and white clay are mixed to create pink clay which is recommended for lacklustre and sensitive skin. Pink clay also helps to maintain skin elasticity.

With proper care and use the sponge should last for at least 2 – 3 months  Each sponge has a string by which you can hang it so it completely dries out in between uses. Never wring it out (squeeze it between your hands to remove excess water after use). Make sure that before and after each use, you rinse the sponge well then sterilize it every 2 weeks by immersing it in boiling water and a tiny amount of household bleach. Don't do it too often as this will break down the fibres quickly. As soon as it starts breaking apart; get a new one. Because the sponges are eco-friendly you can dispose of it by throwing it in your compost or using it at the bottom of potted plants to retain moisture.

With benefits such as these, you don't have to worry too much about using or disposing of it:
