Body Brushing - Why & How

Cellulite affects women of all shapes and sizes. Drier skin makes it more noticeable. The more supple and soft your skin is, the harder it is to see the orange peel effect.

Remember - You could have a wasp-ish waist or monster truck spare tyres and still notice what looks like cottage cheese creeping up your thighs, belly or derrière.

I'd love to say I'm over it but I'm not. But will I bother myself spending buku bucks with lotions and potions? Nope!
What I do know that seems to have worked for me in diminishing the appearance of cellulite is dry body brushing.
It's really easy, you can do it before a bath or shower (I prefer to do it before bed time, so my skin has time to recuperate). 

What you'll need:

A body brush - preferably with a long detachable handle 
Dry skin

The How

Start on dry skin before a bath or shower.

Work the brush in gentle circular, in an upward motion. Follow with longer, smoother strokes.

Always begin at the ankles in going towards your heart - lymphatic fluid flows through the body in the direction of your heart. It's crucial that you brush in the same direction.

Your back is the only exception to the preceding step. Brush from the neck down to the lower back.
After you've finished with the ankles, move up to the lower legs, thighs, stomach, back and arms.

Be cautious of softer and more sensitive skin around the chest and breasts. Do not brush over inflamed skin, open sores or sun-burnt skin.

Ensure you shower to wash away the dead skin cells and impurities.

Then follow it up with a moisturiser to nourish the skin. I mix Vitamin E oil to some glycerine to retain moisture.

The Why

Increasing circulation to the skin could possibly reduce the appearance of cellulite. Cellulite is toxic material accumulated in your body’s fat cells. Lipo looks like a project of pain and despair. I prefer a cheaper, less invasive alternative.

Dry body brushing helps shed dead skin cells (and encourages new cell renewal), which results in smoother and brighter skin. It also aids in the prevention of ingrown hairs. 

It assists in improving your circulation and lymphatic drainage. By releasing toxins, it encourages the body’s discharge of metabolic waste. Less rubbish means your body looks, feels and works better. 

Dry skin brushing rejuvenates the nervous system by stimulating nerve endings in the skin. Done properly and consistently, you'll notice skin gets more sensitive. Good sensitive ;)

A more even distribution of fat deposits means your orange peel looks a lot smoother. Buh bye cellulite.

Dry skin brushing helps your skin to absorb nutrients by eliminating clogged pores. What's not to love?


Like all good things need patience, dry body brushing requires it too. Give yourself at least 30 days to see results. You'll notice softer skin and a dewy, healthy glow quickly. However, with cellulite; remember what you put in your body is just as important as what you apply topically. Also lower your hooos. What took 10 years to accumulate will not disappear overnight. 

Exercise. Increase your water intake. Get enough sleep. You'll notice better, faster results that way. 

If you're using an anti-cellulite cream, incorporate body brushing into your regimen. Most creams don't actually remove cellulite. They make it look better temporarily. If you are sure that's your plan of action, mix it up. 

Oh and remember to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate and moisturise skin well post brush up.
